Glyphiti by Andy Deck: http://artcontext.org/glyphiti/

In 2009, New York based conceptual artist David Horvitz posted daily 'instructions' to his tumblr account. Instructions as artwork have a history that can be traced back at least to Fluxxus artists of the 60's and 70's. Many conceptual artists involve the viewer in making art, embracing the role of chance in the ultimate outcome of the work.

Among other issues, New York media artist Andy Deck is concerned with interactivity and participation in opposition to passive consumption.

  1. I found 241543903 (2009) by David Horvitz to be very funny, and something very typical of early tumblr days! Art and the internet can do amazing things, like reaching thousands of people and making them do random things. He also had other posts telling his followers to shoplift something generic from different stores and to return them to the opposite store they stole it from. This is a bit more extreme but it shows anything is possible through the web.
I found Glyphiti by Andy Deck confusing at first. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at, but I then researched and found the purpose of the website. It is like a never ending art piece. Anyone can edit and move the pixels around to make their own art. I had fun editing other people’s pictures, but I also felt bad for messing up their work. Both of these art projects show the versatility of what you can do on the web.

  2. Glyphiti by Andy Deck was very interesting because you could trace back to 2002 and see all of the changes that have been made. It's a different kind of collaborative art because so many people can easily reach it and ordinary people are doing it. I liked how he called the contributors "artists" because anyone can be an artist, they just have to do it. 24154903 by David Horvitz was hilarious, but also a creative way to get thousands of people involved. I had never heard of it before and it was amazing to see that many pictures of the same thing from people around the world. It just goes to show how the internet connects us all.

  3. At first I didn't understand Glyphiti by Andy Deck. I had to click around and figure it out, but once I did, I realized he called every single person that contributed to his idea an 'artist.' It is super cool since a lot of people don't think they are an artist. He wanted people to realize by contributing something small, when added together overtime with other people's work, anyone's work truly can become a masterpiece. I also found it to be unique, because it can be used as a way to trace history! Most art pieces aren't purposefully made to be touched our altered once they are out in public for the world to enjoy, but this one is! In fact, it is older than a decade. That being said, millions of people have been involved which shows to things: a timeline of unintentional teamwork and a worldwide community that is connected through the internet. Not to mention, the masterpiece will never truly be finished unless someone crashes the website. Ten years from now, it won't be recognizable by me.
Also, 24154903 by David Horvitz allowed me to alter the piece by adding a few more pixels. I wasn't a fan of being able to change other people's work, so I didn't. Although I think by allowing others to do so, the art piece welcomes forgiving creativity. Which in the end, I think both of these pieces are teaching a lesson to the world that now a days, almost anyone has the control to alter your art once it is on the web--and although it may not be the way you want it to be, it is a 95% chance that that could happen one day, and you need to be okay with that, if you are going to publish your art or something on the web.

  4. 241543903 by David Horvitz to be the most interesting out of the two. It was fun to see other peoples interpretation of the picture. While looking at all the different pictures, I thought about how this is, in a sense, a type of interactive art or collaboration. He provokes others to take a picture of their own interpretation of a head in a freezer and contribute it to the overall work. It was cool to see the power of art on the internet and how it may influence or inspire people from all around the world.
Glyphiti by Andy Deck is the best website idea we've looked at this year in my opinion. I really like the risky idea that anyone can contribute to the overall content of the site. This website would have been the best when it was more popular. it would be exciting to refresh the page and see multiple tiles change or a tile you were working on change from the contribution of others. Also, the tiles are extremely fun to draw in. It is cool to see others works. Tiles vary from simple words, to detailed multi-tile designs. i drew a picture of spike in the first tile to see if it will be altered any in the future.

241543903 was interesting, to say the least. I think it's a funny and interesting way to show just how far the internet can reach and influence people. I also had a some-what interesting experience in getting someone to take a picture of me with my head in a freezer. I went up to my family and said, "Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but for a class assignment, I need someone to take a picture of me with my head in that freezer." Needless to say, I got some interesting reactions.
Glyphiti is an interesting way of showing how the internet changes through us rather than showing how it can reach us from far away like 241543903 does. Even though I added my alteration to it, there's really no way to know, not if but when someone will change my contribution, which is ultimately how the internet has worked since its introduction to the public.

  8. It is interesting to see collaborative and interactive works. Glyphiti reminded me of the website where you can make your own Pacman levels in a collaborative website, however the idea is similar http://worldsbiggestpacman.com/#0,0 . I feel like this form of relying on a community effort to form a work of art makes the contributor feel proud of himself or herself. It is risky to do this because of the volume of internet trolls who will make vulgar or insensitive pixel art intentionally. When done right, the different views and pixel art styles are interesting to see

241543903 was also a very interesting because each individual contributor has given his or her own personal spin on what they were told to do to contribute to the art. It is insane because these kinds of art pieces show just how diverse and creative the people willing to do these kinds of challenges are. It feels like it was meant to be a social piece about the lengths people will go to participate in a greater collaborative project

  9. I am actually familiar with Glyphiti. I really like pixel art and I found the site one day while looking at the pixel art subreddit on reddit. I like how the idea is to take submissions from absolutely anyone that comes on the the site and display them for the world to see. The author wants people to take the code and use it anywhere they like, so that the project can spread as far as possible. The idea of real-time updating is also something that is very interesting. You can see what you and everyone else is doing while you are on the site. Working with this site gives an accomplished feeling because the user knows that they are helping to make something. Even the people that get on there just to draw silly or offensive pictures. It is a pretty good representation of the world we live in: plenty of beauty with some ugliness spread throughout.

241543903 is an internet phenomenon. If you spend an unhealthy amount of time on the internet (like me) you have probably unknowingly seen someones contribution to the project. The project shows the outreach of the internet and just how far something can spread. It also shows how people are willing to participate in these types of trends because everyone else is doing it. We still see things like this today with the various challenges that spread throughout the internet (like the cinnamon challenge or the Harlem Shake from a few years ago). That is where the beauty of this piece comes from. Everyone has their own twist to the project, so even though it is the same thing happening in every post, none are ever going to be the same.

  10. 241543903 is very funny to me. I really love how so many people got involved with the trend of taking a picture of yourself with your head in the freezer. I think the different variations of how people took the picture is also very intriguing. I was very confused with Glyphiti at first because it did not make sense to me and I was not sure what I was look at at first. Once I figured it out I I decided that the site is very interesting because you can see everything that EVER happened on the site. Also, I think that it is really cool that anyone can edit it and contribute to the site if they want to.

  11. Both projects are collaborations between many people from all over, and it was cool seeing the different images that people posted showing up when I typed in 241543903 or the different drawings on Glyphiti. These projects can also evolve over time, Glyphiti has a better capability to do this as other people can just edit or erase your images to make room for theirs, while 241543903 will keep all of the older pictures but also show any new pictures that people post online with the tag.

  12. I found both projects to be quite interesting especially in this modern era of technology. I think it's cool that the internet allows art to reach so many diverse groups of people through a simple computer screen. I think the most fascinating part of the projects is how they will evolve as time moves forward and the internet evolves and technology advances. Both pieces are collaborative, but Glyphiti is is interesting in the sense that it is essentially a ever changing art piece, the artist even goes so far as to call each person who posts an artist. It will be interesting to see how technological advances change these pieces over time.

  13. I find this very interesting. In a way its almost like a collaborative art piece between anyone with access to the web. It cool that it allows anyone to see and be a part of the art.

  14. 241543903 is a simple but interesting project. I think its neat how anyone can take a picture of themselves and then be involved in this project. I also think some of the pictures were pretty funny.
